My Passion for Flutes
Hi, I’m Rick Gnerich and I first became aware of Native American Flutes in 2002 when I entered a gift shop in Sonoita, AZ. The owner of the shop encouraged me to try a flute just for fun. I told her “I don’t play any instrument at all”, but she told me it was easy so I tried. To my amazement, it was apparent this wonderful cedar flute was very forgiving of my ignorance and sounded pretty good from the first attempt. Getting used to the fingering was all that was necessary. Within an hour I was having fun and experimenting.
After being laid off from my corporate job and deciding what should be done with my life, Odell Borg and I began working closely at his High Spirits workshop in Arizona.
I now know what my passion is during this time of my life. That is, teaching people about the flute, how to play, to create music and about the history of fluting in North America. How shamans used the instrument to keep their people balanced physically and emotionally. My wife, Rose, shares this passion and accompanies me to various Arts & Crafts venues around the country. (See calendar for appearance places and dates).
The instruction book, included with each flute, explains everything for a beginner who doesn’t read music. Since the notes harmonize so well it was easy to enjoy what I heard. I learned to play my emotions and feelings, expressing myself better than I ever thought possible. It changed my life knowing I can express spiritual intentions through fluting. I feel guided and am listening while the song comes through me.
